The highlight of this slow Sunday morning was not - an espresso, skimming the Sunday New York Times in bed, and then brunch in Soho – like it often was when I lived in NYC, but an excursion into town to buy buckets! The lack of water problem was getting bad these days, and it was decided that there were not enough buckets to go around. Apparently I needed my own buckets. So Estelle and one of the DRC drivers took me downtown to the bucket store. I had never been to a bucket store before, what an experience! Buckets of all colors, types, sizes, and various purposes…it was like plastic heaven! I couldn’t even decide which ones I wanted because I had no idea what to use them for, or how much water I needed to store?
Estelle chose for me: 2 small buckets and 2 large ones, in different colors. I chose blue and green of course! Now I was starting to realize why in the world there were buckets full of water all over the compound! Apparently you can flush a toilet with just stored bucket water if you know how. This would be one of the many techniques I’d be learning this week. I had one thought though, how good is it to have all these buckets of water all over in a malaria-mosquito-infested region? Hmmm….
